Why Good Design Needs Space.
01
Space is part of the composition
We often think about the things we place on a page before thinking about the space between them. But spacing determines how those things relate, what gets noticed first, and how quickly someone moves through the experience.
The absence of an element can be just as active as the element itself.
02
Breathing room changes perception
Dense layouts can communicate urgency and energy. Open layouts can create calm, focus, and importance. Neither is inherently better.
The question is what the experience needs at that particular moment.
03
Let the work breathe
Good spacing isn’t simply about adding more pixels between sections. It is about creating enough room for an idea to register before introducing the next one.
When every part of a design is given the space it needs, the whole system becomes easier to understand, easier to remember, and often much more enjoyable to use.
